LETTER TO THE

ROMANS

Overview:

Traditionally considered to be the most succinct summary of the theology of the Apostle Paul regarding the nature of the Gospel and the place of Jews and Gentiles in the eternal plan of God, this letter is written primarily for the benefit of a thriving Christian community in Rome. It may be studied in seven parts:

(1) an Introduction (1:1-17),
(2) the Unrighteousness of All Humanity (1:18-3:20),
(3) The Righteousness that God Imputes (3:21-5:21),
(4) Requirements Related to Christian Maturity in that Righteousness (6:1-8:39),
(5) Relations of Jews and Gentiles to God's Eternal Plans (9:1-11:36),
(6) the Manifestation of Righteousness(12:1-15:13), and
(7) Closing Greetings (15:14-16:27).

Authorship:

Claimed by the letter itself to have been composed by the Apostle Paul (cf. 1:1), possibly from Corinth, where he may have lodged during the winter (cf. 1 Corinthians 16:5-6).

Composition Date:

Most conservative scholars date this letter near the close of Paul's third missionary journey, during which Paul ministered in Ephesus for more than two years (Acts 19:8-10), after which he traveled through Macedonia and Achaia (19:20; 20:1), arriving in Greece for a three month visit (20:3), during which time he wrote this letter. Its likely date for composition was sometime between the time Gallio began his term as proconsul from ca. 50-54 AD (cf. Acts 18:12, 14, 17) and Festus removed Felix as procurator (Acts 24:27), it is likely that this letter was composed between 52-58 AD, perhaps about 56 AD, or about three years before Paul was incarcerated at Caesarea (cf. Acts 23:33-27:2).

Messianic Theme:

The Gospel of the Messiah
