THE LETTER OF PAUL TO

PHILEMON

Overview:

This letter is named after the individual to whom the Apostle Paul wrote it. Philemon appears to have been a wealthy Christian convert from the Lycus valley, whom Paul probably met while living in Ephesus. An early church tradition suggests that Onesimus, the courier of this letter while he was still a youth, in his later years became the bishop of Ephesus mentioned by Ignatius, an early church father. This short letter may be studied in five sections:

(1) Salutation (v. 1-3),
(2) Prayer of Thanksgiving (v. 4-7),
(3) A Plea for Acceptance (v. 8-14),
(4) The Providence of God and Paul's Relationship with Philemon (v. 17-22), and
(5) Concluding Comments (v. 23-25).

Authorship:

Christian tradition affirms this letter's claims that it was authored by the Apostle Paul, as does internal evidence from this letter itself (v. 1).

Composition Date:

This letter claims to have been written from prison (cf. v. 1, 9, 13, 23), with delivery to the intended recipient provided by Paul's ministry companion Onesimus, who at one time was a slave owned by Philemon. Onesimus traveled home with Paul's ministry associate Tychicus (Colossians 4:7), delivering the letters that had been penned to Ephesus, Colossae, and Laodicea on the way. Some conservative scholars believe this letter was written from Rome, ca. 61 AD. Others suggest it was written during Paul's imprisonment in Caesarea, ca. 58 AD, while he was awaiting transport to Rome. Still others suppose an imprisonment at Ephesus during a time of trouble experienced by Paul in Asia, ca. 55 AD, (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:32, 2 Corinthians 1:18, 11:23) after the Demetrius riot mentioned in Acts 19:23-41.

Messianic Theme:

Equality in the Messiah
