THE BOOK OF

NEHEMIAH

Overview:

Nehemiah is named after the person who describes the fallen state of conquered Jerusalem's defensive walls and his efforts to rebuild them. This book may be studied in three parts:

(1) Nehemiah's Survey and Reconstruction Activities (1:1-6:19),
(2) Renewal of the Covenant (7:73b-10:39),
(3) Subsequent Activities Relating to the Resettlement of Jerusalem (11:1-13:31).

Authorship:

Early traditions and many modern conservative scholars attribute this book to Nehemiah, but because the books of Ezra and Nehemiah are often viewed together due to their similarities of subject matter, others suggest an anonymous chronicler who used a number of ancient, but now lost, records and genealogical resources to compose or edit a history of events recorded after King Cyrus of Persia issued his command for the exiles to return to Israel.

Composition Date:

If this work was compiled by a chronicler who lived after the events recorded in this book, as appears to have been the case with the book of Ezra, this book may have been edited in stages, part of which may have been composed and circulated independently for a short time but later incorporated into the book (cf. Ezra 2 with Nehemiah 7). The earliest Heb. manuscript to divide Ezra and Nehemiah into two separate books dates no later than about 1448 A.D. Portions of this book were written in Aramaic.
