THE BOOK OF

JUDGES

Overview:

Judges derives its name from the basic subject of its contents, which is an historical overview of the time period beginning with events subsequent to the death of Joshua and encompassing intervening centuries before the establishment of Israel’s monarchy. Occurrence of the repeated phrase “There was no king in Israel” (17:6; 18:1; 19:1, 1:25) have led some to conclude that this book served as an apologetic defense for the rise of Israel’s monarchy within the context of a call for the people of Israel to return to God’s covenant, which had been abandoned in exchange for the fertility deities of Canaan. The book may be studied in three parts:

(1) a Prologue (1:1-36), which explains why Israel fell under the influence of the Canaanites;
(2) a Book of Deliverers (3:7-16:31), which describes the consequences of Israel’s apostasy and God’s response; and
(3) a Conclusion (17:1-21:25), which describes the descent of the tribe of Dan into idolatry and the near annihilation of the tribe of Benjamin at the direct orders of the LORD himself.

Authorship:

Anonymous, but rabbinic traditions attribute this work mostly to Samuel, who is thought to have compiled a number of separate records into the final shape and form that we have today. The book shows sign of editorial input significantly later than the events described. See, for example, 1:11, 1:23, 3:1-2, 19:10, and 20:27-28, where place names are listed with explanations that these names had changed over the years since the events described had occurred. Also see 1:21, 1:26, 6:24, 10:4, 15:19, 18:12, and 19:302, which describes events as being recorded much later than their actual occurrence.

Composition Date:

The final form of this book as we read it today bears unmistakable evidence of editorial input after the events recorded in it by making a clear reference to certain apostate Danites, who held sway “until the land was taken captive” (18:30) i.e., until the removal of that population by neo-Assyrian invaders, thus suggesting that the final form of the book dates to no earlier than 734-732 BC.

Messianic Hope:

The Messiah as the Angel of the LORD
