THE BOOK OF

JOSHUA

Overview:

Joshua is so named due to the identity of its central subject, who served as successor to Moses and oversaw ancient Israel’s initial conquest of the land of Canaan. It sets forth a historical narrative that may be divided into four sections for study:

(1) Preparations for Inheriting the Land (1:1-5:15),
(2) The Process of Inheriting the Land (6:1-12:24),
(3) Dividing the Land (13:1-21:45), and
(4) Closing Farewell Addresses (22:-24:33).

Some scholars have noted a similarity between the structure of this book (which chronicles the conquest of Israel’s Promised Land by Joshua) with the New Testament’s book of Revelation (which chronicles the future conquest of earth by Christ).

Authorship:

Anonymous, but some traditions attribute this work either mostly to Joshua (as is specifically claimed in 24:26) or to Samuel. The latter alternative is preferred by some due to many references to the phrase “to this day” (cf. 4:9; 5:9; 7:26), which appears to refer to a time period after the events in the book of Joshua take place.

Composition Date:

Conservative scholars note that the use of the “to this day” formula in Joshua 15:63 and 16:10 suggests a composition date for this book no later than the tenth century BC, because these passages suggest that the tribe of Judah was presently occupying Jerusalem alongside the Jebusites, whom they had been unable to expel at this time. Also, the book attributes the historical record of the covenant renewal ceremony in Joshua 24 as being written by Joshua. 2 Samuel 5:6-10’s observations about the conquering of Jerusalem, which took place about 1003 BC, seems to confirm this latest possible composition date. Joshua 6:25’s observation that Rahab, who survived the conquering of Jericho, was still alive at the time that the book was written, suggests that at least parts of Joshua were recorded during Joshua’s lifetime or shortly thereafter. Also, Canaan’s boundary descriptions in Joshua 18:19 appear to come from survey descriptions contemporary to their completion (cf. 18:4, 6, 8, 9).
