THE BOOK OF

JONAH

Overview:

This book is named after the person whose experiences are the subject of its historical record. Jonah is one of only a few individuals whose ministry and message was solely to non-Jews. This book may be studied in four parts:

(1) God's First Call and Jonah's Disobedience (1:1-16),
(2) God's Discipline and Rescue of the Rebellious Prophet (1:17-2:10),
(3) God's Second Call and Jonah's Obedience (3:1-10), and
(4) Jonah's Displeasure at Nineveh's Repentance and God's Response (4:1-11).

Authorship:

This book contains no direct claim of authorship, either by the prophet Jonah or by anyone else. The only biblical clue about Jonah or the historical context of his ministry is contained in 2 Kings 14:25. The clearly miraculous preservation of Jonah inside the marine creature for three days has led some to suggest that the record of Jonah's ill-fated journey was a late-dated allegorical myth. However, no history of textual transmission, rabbinic tradition, or early Christian tradition supports this presumption. Also, Jesus himself referred to Jonah's experiences inside the creature (cf. Matthew 12:40) as an actual event that occurred in history, claiming it to have been a precursor to his own death and return from the tomb.

Composition Date:

No chronological setting that could assist the reader in dating the book appears anywhere in the text of this work. The earliest possible date for the events described in this book would be during the first half of the eighth century BC, judging by a reference to the time of Jonah's ministry recorded in 2 Kings 14:25. A number of modern scholars favor an exilic or post-exilic date (i.e., between the sixth and fourth centuries BC) for the composition of this work.

Messianic Hope:
