THE LETTER TO THE

HEBREWS

Overview:

This letter is named after the group of Messianic Christians to whom it was addressed, but no one knows today exactly to which group of Jews the original document was intended to be sent. Estimates range from Judea and Galatia in the eastern regions of the Roman Empire all the way to Spain in the western part. Some conservative scholars hold the view that the reference to “those from (or in) Italy” in 13:24 may imply a destination for this letter somewhere in Italy, most logically Jews living in Rome. This work may be studied in six parts:

(1) Prologue: God's Final Statement (1:1-4),
(2) The Son: Superior to Angels (1:5-2:18),
(3) The Son: Faithful Priest (3:1-5:10),
(4) Aspects of the Messiah's Priesthood (5:11-10:39),
(5) On Faith (11:1-12:13),
(6) Concluding Exhortations: The Right Paths (12:4-13:25).

Authorship:

Christian tradition claims that it was authored by the Apostle Paul, even though the book carries no internal evidence of this. In fact, usage by the writer of the first person plural pronouns “we” and “us” throughout (cf. 2:3) suggests that this work may have been compiled as a transcript of a first century public seminar, with Paul and another speaker (perhaps Apollos or Luke) acting as team teachers. At least one early church father suggested that Paul declined to place his name on this letter due to its subject matter pertaining to the Jews, while he viewed his ministry as directed primary to gentiles. Some hold that Paul composed this work in the Hebrew language, and then Luke translated it into Greek, which might explain the use of “we,” “us,” and the admittedly unusual Greek language grammatical style of the letter that seems consistent with a translation from a Hebrew language original.

Composition Date:

No scholarly consensus exists as to the approximate date of the composition of this work. Clement of Rome knew of this letter, and his authentic letter has been dated with some certainty to no later than ca. 96 AD. Internal evidence regarding the spiritual state of the intended readers of this letter (3:12; 5:11-12; 6:1, 9; 10:25, 32-34) suggests that considerable time had passed since they had first become believers in the Messiah. Because we know of no evidence dating from the lifetime of the Apostle Paul regarding Timothy having spent time in prison other than what is recorded in 13:23, some have suggested that Hebrews was composed by someone other than Paul after the Apostle had died but before the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 AD, after which time the levitical sacrifices that were then being conducted (cf. the present tense verbs contained in 5:1; 7:5; 8:3 9:6, 22; 10:4,8, 11; 13:11) would have ceased.
