THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE

GALATIANS

Overview:

This letter was written primarily for the benefit of a thriving but spiritually immature group of Christian communities located within the Asia Minor province of Galatia (now part of modern Turnkey), a portion of the Roman Empire that at the time of Paul's ministry was subject to multiple contractions and expansions of its borders, stretching at times across the heart of Asia Minor from Pamphylia on the Mediterranean all the way to Pontus on the Black Sea (cf. 1 Peter 1:1, which includes a wide geographical area in Peter's definition of Galatia to include Cappodocia, Asia, Bythnia, and Pontus). This book may be divided into three sections for study:

(1) Paul's History: No Other Gospel (1:1-2:21),
(2) Paul's Theology: Justification by Faith (3:1-4:31), and
(3) Paul's Ethics: Life in the Spirit (5:1-6:18).

Authorship:

A claim within this letter itself identifies it as having been composed by the Apostle Paul (cf. 1:1). No clue is given within the text of this book regarding where he composed this letter.

Composition Date:

Dating this work has proven to be a particularly vexing challenge to conservative scholars because of a lack of consensus regarding certain chronological details regarding Paul's life and ministry. However, virtually all scholars agree that this work was written after he had undertaken at least one or possibly two visits to Galatia. If this work was written mainly to churches in northern Galatia, then the earliest possible date for it would be after he completed his second missionary journey (cf. Acts 16:16) and during his two-year Ephesian ministry (cf. Acts 19;10). Others place it near the end of Paul's third missionary journey while he resided in Corinth due to similarities apparently evident in the contents of both this letter and 2 Corinthians. Still others see this letter as having been written following a visit by Paul and Barnabas to this area during Paul's first missionary journey, probably following Paul's return to Syrian Antioch and immediately preceding the Jerusalem Council described in Acts 15 (i.e., ca. 49-50 AD). If this latter theory is correct, this letter is one of the earliest letters written by Paul and contained within the New Testament canon.
