THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE

EPHESIANS

Overview:

Because the destination city of this letter (Ephesus, the capital city of the Roman province of Asia mentioned in 1:1) is missing from a number of early Greek manuscripts of this letter, some early Christian traditions proposed that this letter was a cyclical letter intended for distribution throughout a wide area of the Roman Empire. After an introductory statement (1:1-2), this letter may be divided into a doctrinal section (1:3-3:21) and a practical section (4:1-6:20). The doctrinal section contains

(1) a Prayer of Thanksgiving (1:3-14, at 202 Greek words the longest complete sentence of any book in the Bible),
(2) a Prayer for His Readers (1:15-23),
(3) a Discussion Regarding New Life (2;1-10),
(4) a Discussion Regarding our New Humanity (2:11-22),
(5) a Discussion of Paul's Apostolic Office (3:1-13), and
(6) a Prayer for His Readers (3:14-21).

The practical section discusses

(1) Unity of the Body (4:1-16),
(2) New Life in Christ (4:17-5:20),
(3) New Family Relationships (5:21-6:9),
(4) Christian Warfare (6:10-20), and
(5) Concluding Statements (6:21-24).

A lack of personal greetings in the conclusion (despite Paul having lived about three years in Ephesus, as Acts 18:19-21; 19:1-20:1; and 20:17-38 informs us) seems to suggest that this letter was originally intended to be read by a wider audience than a single city. That this letter contains no reference to problematic situations or doctrinally aberrant views held by any specific group also suggests that the letter could be applied equally well to just about any Christian community extant at the time of its writing.

Authorship:

This letter claims authorship by the Apostle Paul (3:1; 4:1, 6:20) while he was in prison, with delivery of the letter to the intended audience being provided via a courier named Tychicus (6:21-22).

Composition Date:

A general consensus among conservative scholars is that this letter was dispatched ca. 62 AD to its destination, probably along with the Apostle Paul's letter to the Colossians, during his first imprisonment at Rome.

Messianic Theme:

The Blessings in the Messiah
