THE FIFTH BOOK OF THE LAW CALLED

DEUTERONOMY

Overview:

Deuteronomy is so named because it contains a second citation of the Ten Commandments or Ten Principles of the Law (cf. Deuteronomy 5), written in a slightly different form from the citation contained in chapter 20 of Exodus. This book may be divided into ten sections for study:

(1) A Historical Review of the Covenant (1:1-4:40),
(2) The Recitation of the Covenant (4:41-11:32),
(3) Specific Regulations of the Covenant (12:1-26:19),
(4) Recitations of Curses and Blessings (27:1-29:1),
(5) a Historical Review (29:2-30:20),
(6) Provisions for Implementation (31:1-29),
(7) The Song of Moses (31:30-32:44),
(8) a Narrative Interlude (32:45-52),
(9) Moses’ Final Instructions and Blessings (33:1-29), and
(10) a Narrative Epilog (34:1-12) that many conservative scholars attribute to the hand of Joshua, successor to Moses, or to a later editor.

Authorship:

Traditionally attributed to Moses, the ancient leader of the nascent people of Israel.

Composition Date:

Conservative scholars estimate that it was composed sometime during the late 15th and the early 14th century BC after the exodus of ancient Israel from Egypt; i.e., sometime during the eighteenth dynasty of Egypt in general, and specifically during the reign of either Amenhotpe II or Thutmose IV.

Messianic Hope:

The Messiah as the Prophet Like Moses
