THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE

COLOSSIANS

Overview:

This letter claims (1:1-2) that it was written to the church at Colossae, a city in the Phrygia region of the Roman Empire that at one time had been a thriving community with a history going back as far as the reign of Xerxes of Persian (ca. 584-465 BC). Paul did not claim to have founded this church (cf. 2:21), but he did claim that its administration and oversight was his responsibility. Some scholars theorize that Paul's fellow prisoner Epaphras, who was a Colossian (4;12) and envoy from other local churches nearby (4:13) founded it (cf. 1:7), perhaps sometime during Paul's third missionary journey while the Apostle was teaching in the school of Tyrannus in Ephesus. This letter may be studied in four parts:

(1) Introductory Salutation (1:1-2),
(2) The Preeminence of Jesus in Christian Theology (1:3-3:4),
(3) The Preeminence of Jesus with Respect to Christian Living (3:5-4:6), and
(4) Concluding Thoughts (4:17-18).

Authorship:

This letter claims authorship by the Apostle Paul (3:1; 4:1, 6:20) while he was in prison (4:10), with delivery of the letter to the intended audience being provided via a courier. Since Aristarchus (cf. 4:10) accompanied Paul to Rome for his first imprisonment (cf. Acts 27:2), some conservative scholars believe this letter was written at that time. Others suggest it was written during Paul's imprisonment in Caesarea, where he waited two years while awaiting transport to Rome. Others suppose an imprisonment at Ephesus during a time of serious trouble experienced by Paul in Asia (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:32, 2 Corinthians 1:18, 11:23) after the Demetrius riot mentioned in Acts 19:23-41.

Composition Date:

A general consensus among conservative scholars is that this letter was dispatched ca. 62 AD during the Apostle Paul's first imprisonment.

Messianic Theme:

The Preeminence of the Messiah
