THE 3RD LETTER OF THE APOSTLE JOHN

3 JOHN

Overview:

This letter is both the shortest book in the New Testament and in the entire Bible as a whole. It is named after its author, who though not identified by name, calls himself “the Elder” (v. 1) as he writes to his “dear friend Gaius” (v.1). It may be studied in five parts:

(1) Introductory Greetings (v. 1-4),
(2) On the Hospitality of Gaius (v. 5-8),
(3) On the Behavior of Diotrephes (v. 9-10),
(4) On the Consistency of Demetrius (v. 11-12), and
(5) Concluding Benediction (v. 13-14).

Authorship:

Technically anonymous as to the writer because a specific authorship attribution does not appear in this short letter, early Christian tradition held that this letter was written by the Apostle John, brother of the Apostle James (cf. Mark 1:19-20), who also authored 1 John, 2 John, the Gospel of John, and the Book of Revelation. No individual other than the Apostle John was suggested by the early church as the author of this work.

Composition Date:

No scholarly consensus exists as to the approximate date of the composition of this work, but conservative scholars generally agree with the early church father Irenaeus, who wrote that the Apostle John published his Gospel “during his residence at Ephesus in Asia” (Against Heresies 3.1.1). Accordingly, it is reasonable to suppose that this letter (along with 1 John and 2 John) was also written from Ephesus sometime following his composition of his Gospel, which would have been well before the destruction of Jerusalem's Temple in 70 AD.

Messianic Theme:

The Hospitality of the Messiah
