THE SECOND BOOK OF SAMUEL

2 SAMUEL

Overview:

This book is named after the prophet Samuel, whose ministry as prophet and judge of pre-monarchy Israel is chronicled in the first portion of 1 Samuel. A number of theological observations made by the book’s writer/editor(s) suggest that the primary application of this work was to the exiled community of Israel. This book may be studied in two parts: David’s reign (2:1-20:26), and a chronicle of six separate, theologically related events in David’s life about his relationship with God (21:1-24:25) that appear to be arranged topically into a double acrostic relationship (A:B:C-C:B:A) covering David’s relationship with the Lord (21:1-14 and 24:1-25), David’s actions as military leader (21:15-22 and 23:8-39), and David’s poetry (22:1-51 and 23:1-7).

Authorship:

Anonymous. Certain traditions attribute this work to the prophets Samuel, Gad, Nathan, or to other contemporaries of King David, who used a number of preexisting written chronicles and reference records such as 2 Samuel 1:18’s reference to the now lost Book of Jashar as contributing resources.

Composition Date:

Many of the events that occurred during King David’s reign would have been recorded during the early part of the tenth century before the Christian era. A reference to the length of David’s reign (2 Samuel 5:4) suggests that portions were composed after David’s death. References to the plural term “kings of Judah” (1 Samuel 27:6) suggests some elements of the book were added after the united monarchy dissolved during the reign of Rehoboam. Records regarding Shimei, Joab, and Zadok suggest 1 and 2 Samuel were edited into the final form in which we have them today sometime during the later events chronicled in 2 Kings.

Messianic Hope:

The Messiah as Great David's Greater Son
