THE FIRST LETTER OF PAUL TO THE THESSALONIANS

1 THESSALONIANS

Overview:

This letter (as well as 2 Thessalonians, its follow-on correspondence) is named after the Macedonian city of Thessalonica, which had been founded ca. 315 BC by Cassander, who named it after his wife Thessalonica, daughter of Philip II and sister of Alexander the Great. Paul founded this church during his second missionary journey (cf. Acts 15:36-18:22). It may be studied in four parts:

(1) Salutation (1:1),
(2) Statement of Thanksgiving and Hope (1:2-3:13),
(3) Exhortations to Ethical Living (4:1-5:22), and
(4) a Benediction and Conclusion (5:23-28).

Authorship:

Christian tradition affirms this letter's claims of having been authored by the Apostle Paul (1:1), most likely from Corinth after Timothy had returned from a visit to the Thessalonian congregation that he undertook at the request of Paul, probably shortly after Paul's confrontation with Proconsul Gallio.

Composition Date:

This letter, one of the earliest written by the Apostle Paul, was probably written sometime between the late summer of 50 AD to the summer or fall of 51 AD, after Paul had evangelized Macedonia and traveled to Achaia as part of a visit to Athens and Corinth.

Messianic Theme:

Suffering for the Messiah
