THE FIRST LETTER OF PETER

1 PETER

Overview:

This letter is named after its author, whose ministry associate Silvanus acted as courier for the letter (5:12). It may be studied in five parts:

(1) Introduction (1:1-2),
(2) The Community of Saved Exiles (1:3-2:10),
(3) Living as Aliens in a Hostile World (2:11-4:11),
(4) Perseverance in the Midst of Suffering (4:12-5:11), and
(5) Concluding Exhortations (5:12-14).

Authorship:

Christian tradition affirms this letter's claims that it was authored by “Peter, an apostle of Jesus the Messiah” (1:1), who writes that he was an eyewitness of his sufferings (5:1). Citations or allusions to this book contained in the early church father Polycarp's 's Letter to the Philippians (ca. 112-114 AD) suggest that 1 Peter had been in general circulation for a number of decades by the time Polycarp began writing his book.

Composition Date:

No scholarly consensus exists as to the composition date of this work, but conservative scholars generally hold that it was completed and in circulation sometime during the mid-60's AD. Internal evidence seems to indicate that persecution was a localized phenomenon rather than an empire-wide policy, which tends to suggest that this work was completed and in general circulation well before systematic persecution began in the 60's AD.

Messianic Theme:

Courage for the Messiah
