THE FIRST BOOK OF THE KINGS

1 KINGS

Overview:

1 Kings and 2 Kings were originally considered to be a single work, which in English is named after the primary subject matter, a history of the kings of Israel and Judah. Containing apparently contemporaneous reports, a number of post-event theological observations suggest that the primary application of these books was to the exiled community of Israel. 1 Kings may be studied in four parts:

(1) Rise of the House of Solomon (1:1-2:46),
(2) Solomon’s Administration (3:1-11:43),
(3) Division of the Kingdom (12:1-16:34), and
(4) Elijah’s Ministry (17:1-22:53).

Authorship:

Anonymous. Some conservative scholars attribute the books of 1 and 2 Kings to a single author, possibly the same individual who penned Joshua, Judges, and 1 and 2 Samuel, and who also used a number of ancient, but now lost, resources to compose and/or edit a comprehensive history of events recorded from a viewpoint before King Cyrus of Persia issued his command for the exiles to return to Israel.

Composition Date:

Unknown, but the structure of this book suggests that it was edited into the final form in which we have it today sometime after Israel’s defeat, since the author clearly looks to the history of events he records as evidence that God was not finished with his plans for dispersed Israel.

Messianic Hope:

The Messiah as Greater than Solomon
