THE FIRST BOOK OF CHRONICLES

1 CHRONICLES

Overview:

1 Chronicles and 2 Chronicles were originally considered to be a single work named after their primary subject matter, which is a history of the kings of Israel and Judah. This book may be studied in three parts:

(1) God's People (1:1-9:44),
(2) Summary of the Life of Saul (9:35-10:14), and
(3) Summary of the Life of David (11:1-29:19).

Authorship:

Rabbinic and early church tradition attribute this book to Ezra, who used a number of ancient, but now lost, resources to compose and/or edit a history of events recorded after King Cyrus of Persia issued his command for the exiles to return to Israel.

Composition Date:

The structure of these two books suggests that they were edited into the final form in which we have them today sometime after Judah's defeat and exile. 2 Chronicles 36:20 refers to the rise of the “Kingdom of Persia”, which sets an earliest possible date for this work as about 539 BC. The Septuagint version of Chronicles is quoted by the Greek writer Eupolemos, which suggests that a completed form of the book existed as late as about 180 BC, about which time the Septuagint era writer Ben Sira appears to base his description of King David in his apocryphal book of Sirach (47:8-10) on 1 and/or 2 Chronicles. Some conservative scholars date this book to about the fourth century, BC.

Messianic Hope:
